Last week, we ran through a brief list of some of the features that Apple enthusiasts could look forward to in the next iOS update, iOS 11. Additions like a screen recorder, driving safety mode and other improvements have excited members of the tech community who felt that the company's most recent efforts have stagnated the innovation and the growth of their flagship mobile device operating system. Now, thanks to a leak right before the planned unveiling of the newest additions to Apple's device family, we have an idea of what the upcoming iPhone will be called and let's just say it's not what most were expecting.
According to a credible iOS developer source, Apple will be rolling out the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, forgoing their usual routine of attaching an "S" to previous models in their stable of hardware. On top of that, the company will also supposedly be announcing a special anniversary edition of the popular device, tentatively calling it the "iPhone X," this as per the leaked firmware. It definitely packs a sleeker, more potent punch than previous rumored monikers for the new iPhone that have come to the social media fore over recent months, and the 10th anniversary unit will be the focus of Apple's next unveiling ceremony.
Of course, none of this is set in stone and may not be confirmed until right before the new phone will hit stores. The Verge and others have noted that there's still a lot of time for Apple to switch the names of the devices before they're mad available to the public, as well as the fact that there could still be a sizable delay when it comes to getting these new products into the marketplace. As far back as last year, whispers from Apple's headquarters were that they were going to have problems staying on track for a Fall 2017 release because of various technical difficulties, as well as the challenges that they'll face in finding additional OLED suppliers, due to the overwhelming demand for the technology and depleted resources that are able to meet it.
