Last night on The Tonight Show, host Jimmy Fallon revealed that he and the show were stepping up in a big way and getting involved in the Hurricane Harvey relief effort.
Fallon told viewers that The Tonight Show will contribute $1 million to Houston Texan star player J.J. Watt's fundraising effort that he set up to help those affected by Hurricane Harvey. That wasn't the only big spirit-lifter that the TV host provided for viewers on Tuesday night's show. In addition to the big announcement, he then introduced Victoria White, Marquist Taylor and their Houston gospel choir, who sang a moving rendition of the classic song "Lean On Me," which left very few dry eyes in the studio audience when all was said and done.
"Last week we saw the devastating effects of Hurricane Harvey on the state of Texas," Fallon said off the top. "But in the face of this tragedy, we saw good. We saw communities banding together. Neighbors helping neighbors. Strangers helping strangers." Watt, who is one of the best defensive end's in the NFL, has shown his pride for the city of Houston and helped raise more than $21 million, according to his crowdfunding pledge page for victims of the storm. At this point in time, the folks in Houston need all the help they can get, including the House of Representatives passing a $7.85 billion aid package with overwhelming bipartisan support, as per a report from Fox News.
"Nothing can really capture just how big and wide this devastation is," Speaker Paul Ryan said prior to the vote, addressing the need for immediate funding for the relief effort. "You hear a lot of numbers. Tens of thousands of people in shelters. Hundreds of thousands of homes damaged. Nothing can really capture this." Another request for aid is expected to go through the House at some point in the near future, with the monetary value expected to rise above $10 billion. In a city ravaged by the effects of this devastating storm, one can only hope for the safety and speedy recovery for all involved. Big ups to Jimmy Fallon and his show for their efforts!
