PlayStation was the only console that wouldn't join the Fortnite cross-platform play earlier this year. Xbox One, Andoird, iOs, Nintendo Switch, Windows, and Mac users were able to hop into the most popular game in the world together. At first, Sony even blocked cross-platform playing for gamers who used both Nintendo Switch and PS4 systems.
At the time, former Sony CEO and current Chairman for the company Shawn Layden stated, "You can imagine that the circumstances around that affect a lot more than just one game. I'm confident we'll get to a solution which will be understood and accepted by our gaming community, while at the same time supporting our business." His words didn't seem hopeful. But now, current Sony CEO John Kodera has blessed PlayStation 4 gamers with cross-platform play for Fortnite.
Kodera wrote a statement via the PlayStation blog that explains the specifics for the new cross-platform play. "The first step will be an open beta beginning today for Fortnite that will allow for cross-platform gameplay, progression and commerce across PlayStation 4, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, and Mac operating systems," he wrote. "We see the beta as an opportunity to conduct thorough testing that ensures cross-platform play is best on PlayStation, while being mindful about the user experience from both a technical and social perspective."
