When it was announced that PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG for short) was taking Fortnite creator Epic Games to court, the gaming community collectively rolled their eyes. PUBG was not the first battle royale styled game, although it may have been the most influential prior to the launch of Fortnite. Still, Epic Games' title built on the growing battle royale style genre and created one of the most popular games in the world. Now, PUBG is backing down from their lawsuit.
According to Bloomberg, PUBG Corp. sent a letter of withdrawal to Epic Games' attorneys on Monday. The reasoning behind the withdrawal, and whether or not a settlement had been reached, have not been confirmed. PUBG Corp. is a subsidiary of Bluehole, and according to Variety, the parent company's vice president Chang Han Kim originally claimed that Fortnite was replicating the experience that PUBG gave players. “We’ve had an ongoing relationship with Epic Games throughout PUBG’s development as they are the creators of (Unreal Engine 4), the engine we licensed for the game,” Kim stated. “After listening to the growing feedback from our community and reviewing the gameplay for ourselves, we are concerned that ‘Fortnite’ may be replicating the experience for which ‘PUBG’ is known.”
