While everybody was up-in-arms about Black Panther when it came out, some people were quick to forget that T'Challa wasn't the only black superhero in Marvel's lineup at the time, or even the first to get his own movie (shoutout to Wesley Snipes).
Marvel's Luke Cage has proven to be one of the more successful shows in their agreement with Netflix, and it carries a relationship with New York, and with rap music, more than any of the other Defenders. With the second season having been released on June 22nd, some of the cast of the show joined The Breakfast Club to speak on how hip-hop affected the show.
One aspect of the first season was that every episode was named after a Gang Starr song. The new season will follow a similar format, but with Pete Rock & CL Smooth songs instead.
"That mean's somebody gonna die then," Charlamagne chimes in, to the agreement of the cast.
If each season represents an album then, according to Cheo Hodari Coker, the new season is trying to be the sophomore project that brings up the first.
"We wanted to be the second record that elevated," Coker says. "We wanted to be the Low End Theory, we wanted to be Paul's Boutique, we wanted to be The Score. It was always about trying to replicate what worked and then take it to the next level."
