The futuristic action film may dominate the box office.

Pacific Rim Uprising officially hit theatres last night after a few trailers showcased the upcoming action in the John Boyega, Scott Eastwood and Charlie Day lead film. After its opening night at 2,850 North American locations, the movie has pulled in a whopping $2.4 million.

The follow-up to Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 film Pacific Rim is expected to pull in $22 million and $29 million once the movie makes it way to 3,708 more locations this weekend, Variety reports. If the projections are true the action film may surpass Marvel’s blockbuster, Black Panther.

The second installment of the franchise follows John Boyega, who is the son of Idris Elba's character from the original film, as he assembles a team to help take down the latest monsters threatening to destroy planet Earth.

"After Star Wars, I took my money and reinvested it back into a company and built up a team of people who obviously wanted to find a project to dip our feet into," John said about joining the cast of the film. "I knew it would be sci-fi, because I love the genre."
