When hip-hop began, samples were all that DJs and producers had to construct instrumental tracks with. They'd dig through crates of vinyl trying to find isolated drum breaks, melodies or vocals that they could repurpose for use in hip-hop music. Today, sampling has become less common, but a choice sample can still push a track from lukewarm to hot faster than you can say "uh-huh honey".

Rappers are constantly quoting one another in songs. Sometimes it's enough to justify a writing credit, while other times its simply a subtle nod or easter egg to those who know the original source. Drake's verse on YG's "Who Do You Love" certainly falls into the latter category, though Rappin 4-Tay-- the emcee Drizzy interpolates on the verse --felt he should have been compensated.

Although it's not too often you'll diss Drake and hear a reply from him, Drizzy decided that Wimbeldon tennis player Nick Kyrgios' slight shot at his music warranted a response. 19-year Nick Kyrgios, an Australian tennis player, created quite a bit of buzz for himself when he beat Rafa Nadal in the fourth round of Wimbledon. He almost lost said buzz when he had a poor start with his third-round opponent, Jiri Vesely (whom he did end up beating). During a post-match interview, Kyrgios lay the blame on none other than Drake's music.

Drake regrettably pulled out of his headlining slot at The Wireless festival this week, explaining that he was not well enough to make the date. Luckily, festival organizers were able to come up with a suitable replacement for Drizzy-- the always entertaining Kanye West. Ye's performance (much like the one the day before) was full of the colorful commentary and flashy imagery we've come to expect from West, but a short Drake tribute mid-set came as a welcome surprise.

Fantastic Flows Follow Up: MCs With The Best Flows

Two days back we had an article about the origins of certain flows, and some of our ever reliable commenters took it to be some sort of ranking of the best flows, which was not the case. The entire point of the article was to point out that some flows are influenced by region, and some by other artists. It was in no way a ranking of the best flows, yet the internet kids kept yelling "HOW IZ WIZ NOT BE ON DA LISST?" and "YOUNG THUG HAZ BEST FLOWS OF ALL TYME". Yet, there was no list.

Soooo, I was assigned an article about tracing the origin of a lot of the flows in hip hop to different regions around the country. Originally, I thought that would be fairly easy to do, and to a certain extent it is, but the article really went in a different direction the more research I was doing. While there are clear regional influences in today's music, it's almost minimal in the grand scheme of things. Hip Hop as a genre was born in New York, did a lot of growing up out in California, and has even spent some formative years in places like Houston, Chicago and Miami.
