Lonzo Ball's shooting has been abysmal since the start of his rookie campaign but there is reason to remain hopeful.
Lonzo Ball is noted for having a "stranger than fiction" shooting motion. Up until now the 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' mantra need not apply. And yet, as his coaches and teammates report, his shot seems to be falling again, in conjunction with a new comfort level he has found on and off the court. On Monday, for example, he made all his shots, including 3 threes, in a victory over the Atlanta Hawks.
His collegiate stats suggests that there is room for improvement. The ball brothers, especially Melo are said to have "never met a shot they didn't like." That Mamba gene is unteachable. All Laker guards tremble in the shadow of their predecessor. Lonzo's new teammate Isaiah Thomas, himself a high volume scorer, isn't ready to turn the corner. He had this to say about Lonzo's mechanics:
"It's an ugly shot, but he's been successful with it his whole life. So you get to the highest level, there is no need to change it. You just got to figure out ways to continue to make it better."
Since December 12th , Lonzo has seen his three-point percentage rise to a very respectable 42%. If he continues to put in the work, the results will follow, as the old saying goes. The Lakers next game is tomorrow at San Antonio.
