Was Leo dreaming, or was he awake?

The ending of Inception left many people questioning their own reality. I think I saw the Christopher Nolan film in theaters at least seven times. The plot is intricate and expansive, much like many of Nolan's other projects. Just like Memento, The Dark Knight, and The Prestige, Nolan laced Inception with his signature mind-numbing twists. By the end of the film, viewers were not sure whether Leonardo DiCaprio's character was still in a dream, or if he was in reality. The movie ends as DiCaprio's dream-revealing spinning device begins to wobble slightly.

Michael Caine, who plays that father to DiCaprio's character in the movie, recently spoke at a viewing of the film at Film 4 Summer Screen. According to the Independent, Caine revealed to the audience that Nolan trusted him with the true answer to the movie's finale years ago. “When I got the script of Inception, I was a bit puzzled by it and I said to him 'I don't understand where the dream is',” Caine explained to the audience. “I said, 'When is it the dream and when is it reality?' He said, 'Well when you're in the scene it's reality.' So get that - if I'm in it, it's reality. If I'm not in it, it's a dream.” Since Caine was in the final scene of the film, that would confirm DiCaprio was, in fact, living in reality.
