"Fortnite" gets competitive.

Fortnite has always been a fairly easy to play game. That's what adds to the appeal of the most popular video game on the planet. Besides the fact that it's free, the drop in and play game style is permissive and simple to understand. Although fans of the game might get competitive with each other, the game modes are mostly focused on having fun and completing challenges. A new game mode will change all that, and put Fortnite players in direct competition with each other to see who can amass the most wins.

Developer Epic Games has announced a new game mode, called "Solo Showdown," which awards gamers points based on what position they finish in. The gameplay remains the same in the solo battle-royale styled game, with the only difference being the point system. Ranking will start with first place, who will be rewarded 100 points for the victory. Second place gets 94 points, and third place receives 91 points. The list continues down to reward 76-100 place with 25 points.

At the end of the limited time competition, the players who accumulated the most points will be nicely rewarded. The player who earns the top spot will receive 50,000 V-Bucks, which is worth roughly $500. The award placement is as follows:

1st Place: 50,000 V-Bucks
2nd - 4th Place: 25,000 V-Bucks
5th – 50th Place: 13,500 V-Bucks
51st – 100th Place: 7,500 V-Bucks
