It's hard to believe that NWA's MC Ren would ever be rapping on trap-inspired production, but the man is nothing if not adaptable. Not long ago, Ren dropped off his first solo track in five years, the Hushdegod produced "King Villain." While his chosen musical backdrop may have shifted, Ren's villainous persona has yet to soften. Case in point, the legendary rapper spoke about the track with Ambrosia For Heads, stating "The record is just me talking sh*t, some ‘villain sh*t. I’m letting fools know they ain’t sh*t, they’re wack, and my sh*t is hard."
He continues, explaining his decision to stray from his comfort zone. "With this track, I wanted something different," says Ren. "A lot of people from my era stick to the script a lot of the times and don’t want to go from that blueprint...From here on out, I just want to do new sh*t. I might rap on a Reggae record, a Rock record, or whatever."
And thus, the Ren-aissance has begun. It's certainly an interesting transition for the Villain, who rides the beat with a veteran's confidence, employing several new and unfamiliar flows. An out-of-character deviation, or a welcome evolution? You be the judge.
