XFL back?

It looks like Vince McMahon is ready to announce his plans for a new professional football league. Whether it will be the XFL again, or the URFL, or something similar, we'll find out soon enough.

McMahon, the Chairman and CEO of WWE, is prepared to make a "major sports announcement" today at 3pm. If interested, you can watch the stream live on Twitter, Facebook and Youtube.

ESPN's Darren Rovell is reporting that the announcement will indeed focus on McMahon's attempt at starting a new football league with Alpha Entertainment, a company that McMahon formed, and funded, by selling $100 million of WWE stock. News of McMahon selling 3.34 million shares of his WWE stock came just days after Alpha Entertainment filed for five trademarks related to the XFL on December 16th.

The company also reportedly sought to trademark "URFL" which could be the name of McMahon's alternative professional football league if he's not looking to use "XFL" again. Additionally, the WWE recently filed for the “He Hate Me” trademark, which was abandoned by XFL player Rod Smart in 2011.

The XFL, a joint venture between WWE and NBC, originally debuted in 2001 but only last one season, as WWE and NBC lost approximately $35 million each, after taxes, on the league, according to Darren Rovell.
