In the world of Retrofuturism, Dam-Funk occupies a lane all to himself. To my knowledge he's still employing the synth pads from yesteryear, and why incur change if your entire manifesto calls for stiff repetition. I for one understand the appeal, and his appeal to fans of "funk." Interest for Dam-Funk from a rap perspective really only comes to fruition when the emphasis is on bilateral production. On the occasion that he does sing or rap (like his did on "Hood Pass Intact"), it's to convey a simple message of humility, time and time again.
On "In The City," proves himself even more efficient in passage, communicating that message of modesty without a single peep out of him. Once the instrumental reaches its mandated "groove spot," you feel as though you've entered a loop, which in turn necessitates deep thought. So if you want to lean over the bannister play something else. On the other hand, I can't think of a more strapping to repeat my morning mantras.
Dam-Funk is readying Architecture II for its August 3 release. Rest assured the keytar will make an appearance.
