Tinashe- Vulnerable Feat. Travi$ Scott
I honestly haven’t listened too much, if anything, from actress-turned-singer Tinashe. And before pressing play on this record, I wasn’t really expecting much either. However, Boi-1da and Vinlyz come correct with a dark, eerie beat, as Tinashe seductively sings over it. The production definitely brings this track to new heights, but it’ll be interesting to see what else Tinashe releases. While the Travi$ feature may give the track a little extra appeal or a few extra clicks, it doesn’t make or break this track.
TeeFlii- Brand New Feat. Problem
TeeFlii definitely has a buzz on him. The West Coast singer follows in the veins of a fellow West Coaster, Ty Dolla $ign, both of whom seem to be re-working the r’n’b genre and giving it a distinct West Coast sound. Problem adds a verse to this record which features a looping guitar riff. While it was thought to be on TeeFlii’s strangely-titled ANNIERUO’TAY 3: Who the Fuck Is Annie? but for some reason, it appears it didn’t make the final cut. Nonetheless, it’s worth checking out.
Lil Bibby- Water
This is a rather soulful track from Lil Bibby with somewhat serious subject matter, as the 18-year old (who sounds like he's 45 but looks like he's 15?!) raps about trying to keep his head above water. While the Chicago native may usually be associated with the trap, this strays from that sound-wise but in content it's still on point, as it's all about hustling. This track is almost like a motivational speech, and not only for listeners but for Bibby himself. Bibby’s anticipated mixtape Free Crack drops on November 29th.
Jamie xx- Untitled
Some mandatory producer/beat vibes for your Underrated Audio experience. There’s little to say about this track from The xx producer/remixer, Jamie xx, as it randomly surfaced online without a name (hence “Untitled.”). Nonetheless, it’s a melodic, mixed-up masterpiece to be enjoyed in the early morning when you’re done partying.
Sir Michael Rocks- Ol Box Body Feat. Pouya
While we’re still waiting for an update on Sir Michael Rocks’ debut album BANCO, Mikey puts in time with fellow Chi-town rapper Pouya for Gookin, a $2.99-mixtape. This was the one and only leak from the project, and in true Mikey form, it’s jokes. The hook, in particular, “Ol' Box body bad knees/Miley Cyrus having ass booty cheeks having ass/Instagram ho hold it down/Deep fried weave ass thots/With your crispy ass toes in them knee socks.” It’s not Mikey’s best shit, but worth a spin, and it’ll hold you over until BANCO (hopefully).
AWKWORD- Go! Feat. Joell Ortiz, Slug (of Atmosphere) & Maya Azucena
AWKWORD got some real rappers on this ish, both Joell Ortiz and Slug add their two cents with singer Maya Azucena handling the energetic hook. Both Joell and Slug may outshine AWKWORD on this one, but when you have two MCs of their caliber, it’s hard not too. The only problem with this record is the fact that it makes us want new music from Atmosphere, and they’ve been quite missing-in-action these days.
