After a long wait, SURF is finally here. The debut LP from The Social Experiment (aka SOX) is billed as Donnie Trumpet & The Social Experiment despite the fact that the band’s biggest star is obviously Chance The Rapper. The album features, although they aren’t listed on the iTunes version of the free album, the likes of J. Cole, Big Sean, B.o.B, Busta Rhymes, and tons more, making SURF one of the year’s most star-studded affairs.

Protests in Ferguson are still going strong following the tragic killing of 18-year-old Michael Brown last week in Ferguson, Missouri. In fact, the marches have stretched all the way to New York City, as Times Square was filled with supporters of justice for the slain teen just last night. Plenty of musicians have echoed similar sentiments toward the situation, with J. Cole and Elle Varner each releasing songs of support today. B.o.B also weighed in on the issue on Twitter today, but his contributions were far less positive.

B.o.B. is one of those artist that currently stands in a grey area: he's attained mainstream success thanks to catchy tunes, but he's also a seasoned rapper, and finds himself balancing between full-out pop music and more hardened hip-hop. So who are his main fans, the picky hip-hop heads or the avid radio listeners? On No Genre 2 he makes a plea for both.

Though it may be overshadowed by the anniversary of Nas' Illmatic a week prior, OutKast's debut album, Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, turned 20 today. The landmark LP is said to be one of the main blueprints of Southern hip-hop, and to celebrate, Myspace gathered eight rappers who have been influenced by the album to share their memories of each track. When hip-hop began, samples were all that DJs and producers had to construct instrumental tracks with. They'd dig through crates of vinyl trying to find isolated drum breaks, melodies or vocals that they could repurpose for use in hip-hop music. Today, sampling has become less common, but a choice sample can still push a track from lukewarm to hot faster than you can say "uh-huh honey".

    Charts Don’t Lie: January 5
    Jan 5, 2014 at 07:00am
With the holiday season winding down, we're still seeing the affect it had on the charts and the sales. It seems like almost everyone on today's Charts round-up had an increase in sales and a rise up the Billboard 200 in the past seven days except for B.o.B. Unfortunately, Underground Luxury does not seem to be taking off in any way, and although it was released in time to give as a Christmas gift, it apparently wasn't. For his second week on the charts Bobby Ray sold 19,000 units, and dropped to #30.

Bobby Ray is often cited as one of today’s underrated rappers. In the past, his hip hop game has come under fire for infusing pop and rock into his music. He’s also been dubbed a “sell-out” many a time, for creating radio winners. On Underground Luxury, he fights the critics bringing more of a hip hop feel.
