Slaughterhouse may not be around anymore, but that doesn't mean the boys can't still put in work. As fans of the supergroup are likely aware, KXNG Crooked and Joell Ortiz are gearing up to drop off a collaborative project called H.A.R.D, from which the title track has already been released; if you missed that, check it out right here. Now, the pair have come through with another drop off the album in "Memorial Day," a track that finds both emcees in a contemplative state.
As explained in an official press release, the somber track pays homage to those who lost their lives in 2020, a particularly hard year for both parties. "November 11th, 2019 my friend and fellow Long Beach rapper Bad Azz died," explains Crook. "2020 brought more death into my personal life when my Father passed and then my children’s grandmother. Cali mourned the deaths of Kobe, GG and all the passengers in that fatal helicopter crash. The globe mourns for those lost to the Coronavirus."
Over soulful Heatmakerz production, Ortiz takes a moment to reflect on the lost ones in his life. "RIP to my childhood friend and high school teammate Terrence “T-Black” Earlington and to my homie and 1/2 of our “Gorilla Glue” duo Frederick “Fred da Godson” Thomas," he explains, keeping that mournful tone throughout his emotional verses. It's clear both men had a lot to say on this one, so pay attention and raise a glass to the fallen. Look for H.A.R.D to arrive in full on Friday, May 29th.
