Hip-Hop has its day.

During 1973, inside the apartments and on the corners of 1520 Sedgwick Ave in the Bronx, a new art form and lifestyle was created.

Hip-hop, once considered a fade— a trend that would slowly die out with the times, has since become not just one of the world's most popular musical genres, but also one of the preeminent forms of self-expression. From lyrics to fashion—from break beats to autotunes, hip-hop in all it's manifestations is finally getting its worldwide recognition.

Global Hip Hop day will kick-off on June 8, first reported by XXL. The New York City Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment, Hot 97 and the Office of the Bronx Borough President are working together to host the event. One of hip-hop's forefathers, DJ Kool Herc will be there for the proclamation ceremony.

There will also be a renaming ceremony held at a block party at Cedar Playground, located on the avenue block, which will now be known as Hip-Hop Boulevard. Herc won't be the only founding father in attendance: DJ Red Alert, Grandmaster Caz, Kid Capri, Doug E. Fresh, Slick Rick, and many others are expected to attend the ceremony and events to finally give hip-hop the day it deserves.
