Whitney Houston's ascent into the upper echelons of the music industry, alongside her tragic demise, will be recounted in the upcoming documentary aptly titled Whitney. Helmed by Oscar-winning director Kevin Macdonald, the hotly-anticipated film will make its debut at the Cannes Film Festival this week.

The project is described as an "unflinching portrait" of the "I Will Always Love You" hitmaker and her family, and will shed "new light" on her personal life. Macdonald was given exclusive access to demos, archival footage, and rare live performances, which will significantly bolster the film's authenticity and expository nature.

Furthermore, Macdonald was given final cut privileges for his forthcoming project, noting how "I wouldn't have entered into either of them unless I had final cut. But we've actually had a very unacrimonious and pleasant collaboration, and they've been supportive of the film, even though there are quite a few sensitive issues brought up."

The film is expected to hit theatres on July 6.
