Memories Don't Die feels like an important milestone for Toronto's Tory Lanez. While talented and prolific, at times it felt as if Fargo was doomed to live out his days as a perpetual underdog; beefing with golden boy Drizzy is a surefire way to catch ire from legions of loyal Stans. Yet this weekend, Lanez has dropped off his second studio album, a revelation in may ways. Plenty have understood the depths of Tory's artistic range, but his lyrical ability still remains slept on. Upon receiving "Hate To Say" (as well as fire opener "Old Friends x New Foes," which I was also tempted to highlight), it's clear that Tory has sharpened his craft, delivering his insight with poise, charisma, and confidence.
Plenty of old beefs are examined; from his silly tete-a-tete with Pi'erre Bourne over an unauthorized remix, to his near-scuffle with Travis Scott over sonic similarities. Of course, the palaver with the Six God is too big an event to go unnoticed, and Tory paints a vivid picture with a storyteller's finesse. "Hate To Say" is a highlight on an excellent album. Props to Tory for this one.
