T.I. & Rihanna Support Cyntoia Brown, Who Was Imprisoned For Life As A Child

T.I. and Rihanna throw their support behind Cyntoia Brown.

These days, many in the hip-hop community have been critical of the criminal justice system, particularly when the complexities of race relations are added to the mix. Many notable inconsistencies have led to some serious skepticism; consider the fact that Meek Mill got up to four years in prison for a parole violation, while student athlete Brock Tuner was only given six months for assault with intent to rape an intoxicated woman, among other charges. Suffice it to say, public discourse has been increasingly critical of the American criminal justice system, and outspoken artists like T.I. are always quick to throw their hats into the debate. Such was the case last night, when Tip Harris threw up a photo of Cyntoia Brown, along with the caption "Free da GOAT."

In case you're wondering, Cyntoia Brown is a young woman currently serving a life sentence in the Tennessee Prison For Women, for the murder of a man named Johnny Allen. While the details of the case are extensive, and can be read about in greater detail here, Brown was ultimately the product of a difficult upbringing, which found her violently forced into prostitution at the age of sixteen. She ended up meeting Allen, a real estate agent, and going back to his place, where he allegedly began boasting about his guns. She was afraid that he meant to do her harm, and ended up fatally shooting him. Despite reports that she suffered from fetal alcohol syndrome which may have impaired her judgement, Brown was eventually tried as an adult, and given a life sentence. She is currently twenty-eight years old, and has recently obtained her degree from Lipscomb University's in-jail program.

Again, that's a very simplified version of the case, and if you're interested in diving into Cyntoia Brown's tragic story, you can catch a BBC documentary above. Clearly, Brown's plight is on both T.I. and Rihanna's minds, as both artists recently posted her picture on their IG pages. While TI's message was straight to the point, RiRi's was more heartfelt, stating: "did we somehow change the definition of #JUSTICE along the way?? cause..... Something is horribly wrong when the system enables these rapists and the victim is thrown away for life! To each of you responsible for this child's sentence I hope to God you don't have children, because this could be your daughter being punished for punishing already!"

It seems the case of Cyntoia Brown is more topical than ever before, and it wouldn't be surprising to hear her name come up more frequently in the public discourse.

stupid mf’s will rally behind anything lmfao, yes she had a fucked up life. but instead of going to the police, she picked up drugs & it was her fault she got into that situation. also she murdered the man, ROBBED him, TOOK HIS CAR, then anonymously reported the homicide. she may not have deserved life being a 16 year old, but this #freecyntonia bullshit has gotta shot. she’s a killer & was a troubled child. prison did good things for her.

wake up, cut off his penis and threw it in the garbage disposal and the all The Talk hostesses, including Sharon Osbourne, and the audience just hysterically laughed at this story. This is a war. What are you waiting to kill a feminist today?

Pikudo Pikao
- Nov 22, 2017

That is what a feminist looks like. A pussy killed a man. Now she is a wronged hero. They hashtagged to free that woman who drugged her husband, tied him to the bed, waited him to

She was a prostitute who cowardly killed a defenseless client and 16 years old people are not children. Not in the law, any religion or MEDICINE. Fucking retards.

Lol some of you are stupid. She still shot a man dead who wasn't going to kill her. Just because she "felt threatened" doesn't justify using a firearm to take someone's life. Its not like this dude beat her or was going to kill her. People suffering from withdrawals and addiction to drugs and alcohol often lose it in a moment and do something crazy. She's a murderer and y'all logic extremely fucked. prostitution or your past doesn't give you a pass to kill clients foh??

You must be some dumb ass from Tennessee, that's not educated or never lived life. First of all, you can't start your opinion as if it matters. They're entitled to an opinion without being insulted. Your logics are fucked, you are bigbosslden? More like lilworkermind. Lol

Police kill unarmed civilians because they feel threatened and get off Scott free. I'm just saying why do you feel like this young girl at the time couldn't feel that her like was being threatened so she react like police officers do an killed the person. The laws seem to be double standard. Do you agree that the laws are used differently

No child should ever go to prison when you dont know what happen no good defence and Tennessee suck rascist.

lora Cobb
- Nov 21, 2017

Ridiculous, a child why was she alone with this man? Did she have a good defence lawyer? What did he do to her? Tennessee a no good state anyway.

This don't make no damn sense. She never had a chance at a real life to live. She was only doing what she knew how to do in a situation like that.... and it was to defend herself. #FREECYNTOIABROWN

If you don't know the facts, it's not right commenting shit to make her look worse. She was forced, didn't have a way out. She was even choked til she fell unconscious by her boyfriend, just to prove a point. He even threatened saying, he knows where her family lives. She was 'pimped out', in every sense. So, please watch the full BBC documentary, it was justified. She's even reformed, and is a perfect inmate who is setting an example. She shouldn't be there.

We see in justice everyday ,we sit and do nothing... TI financially you are in a position to make a difference. We should start encouraging our kids to step into positions in life like judges, attorneys, mayors, council members, thats what they do. So what are we gonna do about it? Anyone who has lived to be 30 know you dont think like a sixteen year old when you get that age the only reason she got life is because he was a white man... this is crazy

Brad Well
- Nov 22, 2017

Shut up, hoe. Not everything is about the white man.

Doggo Geneses
- Nov 21, 2017

I understand people can be reformed and she's accomplished stuff, but at the end of the day, she's a murderer. Doesn't matter the upbringing.

Danktrumpmemes
- Nov 21, 2017

I hope you know people are forced into doing this kind of shit. It's not like she could just get up & leave anytime, if you don't believe this is justified your morals are pretty fucked up.

Melissa Petit Homme
- Nov 21, 2017

This whole story brought tears to my eyes.. you have to understand also that she was child at that time.. I probably would react the same way she did if I thought someone was about to kill me... she faced so many obstacles along the way that probably was an effect on why she reacted the way she did... the fact there is that she deserved a second chance.

lora Cobb
