The Rock opens up about his battle with depression.
How the most invulnerable are not always how they appear on the outside. Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson sat down with Express to discuss his more vulnerable side. He opened up about his battle with depression shortly after witnessing his mother's suicide attempt, an event which occurred years in the past while mother and son shared an apartment in Nashville.
His mother upon learning they were to be evicted from their home, ejected herself from a moving car into oncoming traffic on the busy I-65. The Rock was somehow able to "pull her back on the gravel shoulder of the road.”
The event had a traumatic effect on both mother and son. In hindsight, The Rock recognizes that his career path and his life could have turned out differently had it not been for their mother-son bond.
“We both healed but we’ve always got to do our best to pay attention when other people are in pain, we have to help them through it and remind them they are not alone.”
To this day, Dwayne's mother Ata has zero recollection of the suicide attempt. In saying so, Dwayne Johnson has added name his in support of mental health causes. Hopefully we'll see a change in policy design as a result of these admissions, somewhere down the line.
