Brownsville rapper and producer and amateur New York historian Kaseem "Ka" Ryan's new album Honor Killed the Samurai is one of the best underground albums of the year. Upon listening through its 10 songs I felt compelled to share it, even though it was released last week. To some degree, Ka treats wordplay as an end unto itself, like Doom. But mostly he uses clever, conceptual bars to weave strands of Japanese philosophy through his own experiences growing up in Brooklyn. “We was born in the thorns, few arose / Once a town’s noose, now in soundproofs pursuing golds."
