Sophie Turner is one of the leading ladies in HBO's beloved cult series Game of Thrones. The 23-year-old has been with the series from its debut in 2011 and although she loves her job, she recently opened up to Dr. Phil on his podcast about the hard times she endured as a teenager going through puberty and dealing with public criticism.

“I was so in love with [working on ‘Game of Thrones’] … I couldn’t believe I was going to get paid for it … Everything was incredible, it only started to go downhill I think when I started to hit puberty and really puberty at like 17 and my metabolism was slowing down massively and I was gaining weight,” Turner told Dr. Phil on his podcast, adding, “and there was the social media scrutiny and everything and that was when it kind of hit me.”

Sophie detailed how she suffered from depression for about five or six years and it paralyzed her, leaving her with challenges with of getting out of bed and seeing friends.

“It’s weird. I say I wasn’t very depressed when I was younger, but I used to think about suicide a lot when I was younger. I don’t know why though,” she explained. “Maybe it’s just a weird fascination I used to have, but yeah, I used to think about it. I don’t think I ever would have gone through with it. I don’t know.”

As for now, Sophie says she has more self-love than before and her fiance Joe Jonas has helped her see her "redeeming qualities."
