It was back in August that SonReal delivered on his One Long Dream project. It was during the making of this effort, that the Vancouver-based artist dealt with the death of his father, who passed away right before SonReal inked his major label deal in 2016. Now, as he gets ready to unveil One Long Dream’s deluxe vinyl edition, set to finally arrive some time this month, he leads the outing with his latest single “My Friend,” an ode to his father, produced by icon Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds.

“‘My Friend’ is a piece of music that had to be made,” SonReal told Zane Lowe in a recent sit-down. “It’s one of those songs that become things that you add to your playlist or collection and stay with you for the rest of your life.”

The new cut is a fitting addition to Son’s One Long Dream, that he described as being a comprehensive collection of his own life experiences, and in the spirit of transparency, he appropriately adds onto the theme.

“I think putting it out to the world has been the most refreshing feeling ever,” he said of the project back in September in an interview. “Just watching it translate, watching people be excited about it, watching people be excited about these videos were about to drop off the album, is great. I think anytime you put a body of work that you're proud of; it's this refreshing, exhilarating feeling. I'm ready to get to work, though. I put that out, I put a bunch of new music, and people are excited, so now it's more inspiring for me to get to work. You know, seeing the reaction from it and having it out and being so excited about my team and me, we're just excited to keep it going, man, and work on the next album right away.”

Quotable Lyrics:

If I got you, then I know I got something
If we ain't got time, then we ain't got nothin
Ain't got hate, then we ain't got lovin
If we ain't got each other, then we ain't got nothin.
