Mama knows best, and Tina Knowles knew from the very start that her daughters were going to be big. In a recent sit down with Maria Shriver, the mother of both Beyoncé and Solange Knowles revealed that when her daughters were younger, and Beyoncé began to experience a taste of fame in their hometown of Houston that she would take days off and dedicate them to Solange so that her youngest daughter wouldn’t react negatively to her older sister’s growing stardom.

“I grew up where I felt like my mother liked my brother more and I was really sensitive to it,” explains Mama Knowles. “So, on Wednesdays I took off from work and that was Solange’s day. She was a lot younger than Beyoncé and it was tough because she was five years-old and Beyoncé was this little superstar in our city.”

She went on to reveal that when the two superstar siblings were as young as five and nine-years old, respectively, she took them to counseling in order to make them aware of each other’s roles in their lives, wanting Beyoncé to be understanding of her little sister’s sensitivity to her fame at the time.

“So, I took them to counseling very early so that the counselor could help Beyoncé be more sensitive to Solange because she couldn’t stand her for a minute. You know when they were little, [Solange] was five, she was all in her stuff, she was trying to hang around her and her friends and Beyoncé was really irritated. But, it made her more sensitive to who her sister was and what she had to deal with because of her. Solange had to deal with being a bit more shadowed and it made [Beyoncé] more sensitive and more protective and they’re still fiercely protective of each other.”

Clearly she was on to something as both Beyoncé and Solange have never shied away from their support of one another whether in public or private which might explain just why Solange went so hard that fateful evening on the elevator.
