A couple of weeks after his King Cosa tape, Skooly is back with a deep new record, “Own This Year,” produced by one of ATL’s hottest young talents in Spiffy Global. With a steady, improvised flow, the TRU trapper conveys feelings of pain, anger, and ultimately, hope, knowing that, as he’s made it this far, this upcoming year is his for the taking. At certain points, he injects extra grit and fury into his lyrics; “I’m the motherfuckin’ dopest, taste it / I’m the motherfuckin’ coldest, you cannot take it!” Incredible passion.
Spiffy, whose recent work includes Trouble’s “Ahh Man,” Offset’s “Power Moves,” and the entirety of Hoodrich Pablo’s Master Sensei tape, crafts an especially serene backdrop for “Own This Year.” Co-production comes from Hoodrich’s own DJ Spinz.
