Shawn Harris, the artist who came to prominence under the name Nikko Lafré, decided to sneak up on us with a batch of new tunes tonight -- four in total, each off his upcoming project, LAFRÉ. Well, they're demos, but these are all quality recordings, and it's exciting to think that the final LAFRÉ versions might sound even better. "Somewhere in LA" is one that's sounding particularly hot, and it features Portland singer TYuS -- who's definitely one to look out for.

Harris hails from Minneapolis, though he's making a dent in the L.A. scene. "Somewhere in LA" is a thrilling, late-night track that has an illicit club feel. The rhymes are tough but smoothly delivered; "I ain't signed yet, but it feel like it" -- indeed. Midway through the song, TYuS comes in and things take an unexpected but exciting R&B turn. LAFRÉ is looking good.

Quotable Lyrics

And lord knows I ain't a ballplayer
Still I'm in the section with the ballplayers
And the pretty bitches, got 'em all sayin'
I'm that n*gga, a fine ass young trap n*gga
