Selena Gomez has been keeping a mostly low profile this summer, despite releasing new singles "Bad Liar" and "Fetish," the latter of which features Gucci Mane as a supporting artist. Fans had been speculating for a while as to the reason for this bizarre absence from the public eye, something Selena doesn't normally shy away from. There was even talk that she wasn't out and about promoting her new music because she was embarrassed by it. However, thanks to some clarification from the pop star herself, nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, we haven't seen much of Gomez this summer because, in actuality, her life had been hanging in the balance.
As per a report from Billboard, Gomez revealed that she'd undergone a kidney transplant that literally saved her life, and that she's been recovering for the last little while. She shared a touching picture on her Instagram page, showing her and another woman hand-in-hand while lying in separate hospital beds. It turns out that the other person in the picture is her friend Francia Raisa who acted as the donor she needed to complete the procedure. In the caption to the post, Selena wrote:
"I’m very aware some of my fans had noticed I was laying low for part of the summer and questioning why I wasn’t promoting my new music, which I was extremely proud of. So I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering. It was what I needed to do for my overall health. I honestly look forward to sharing with you, soon my journey through these past several months as I have always wanted to do with you."
Despite the health setback, it looks like the singer has had no complications since the surgery and will make a full recovery. She has slowly returned to making public appearances over the past few days, participating in the Hand in Hand fundraiser that went down Tuesday night (September 12th) and made an appearance at New York Fashion Week, both to support her boyfriend The Weeknd as well as check out the runway show for Coach, the luxury brand that she reps.
