After only one season, Ruby Rose has had her fill of Batwoman. When it was announced that the Orange is the New Black star would be helming the title role of the CW series, the news made waves. The casting made Ruby Rose the first gay lead character in a live-action superhero series, and she makes her exit not long after Batwoman announced its renewal for season two.
“I have made the very difficult decision to not return to Batwoman next season,” the actress said in a statement. “This was not a decision I made lightly as I have the utmost respect for the cast, crew and everyone involved with the show in both Vancouver and in Los Angeles.” According to Deadline, the role of Batwoman will be recast by another LGBTQIA+ actress.
The outlet also speculates why Ruby Rose decided to walk away from the Warner Bros. production, noting that it didn't have anything to do with the near-paralyzing injury she sustained while filming. Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic did cut things short when their 22-episode season was only able to produce 20 episodes. "I hear Rose, whose most extensive previous TV gig was a nine-episode arc on Orange Is the New Black, was not happy, and the show’s team was not happy to a point where no one could see this going for another season. It was not a good fit, and the studio and the star opted to part ways," Deadline reported. We'll keep you updated on who will replace Rose in the forthcoming season.
