Kanye West's controversial slavery comments that he said in May have seemingly been pushed to the side since he dropped five G.O.O.D. Music albums. A few people can agree that his statements, calling slavery a "choice," have impacted their opinion on Kanye and not too long ago he clarified his words saying the following:
"Of course I know that slaves did not get shackled and put on a boat by free will," he wrote. "My point is for us to have stayed in that position even though the numbers were on our side means that we were mentally enslaved..."
Pharrell recently teamed up with Spotify's Black History Is Happening Now campaign and he's shared his response to Kanye's words, in the most subtle yet effective way. In the video below you can see Pharrell posted up in a room filled with lightbulbs while he explains how America was built by different cultures, "but mainly the African Americans."
"Because they were the ones that were put to task to go out and actually do the work,” he adds. “And all the while having to endure the pillaging of where they were from, identities taken from, and forced to do things that they didn’t want to do. Far from a choice."
“Our influence is everywhere, in clothing, in music. You know, there would be no rock & roll without us. Like, we’ve been here. Black now is America, black future is America, black history is America."
