Oddisee's new song "Like Really" utilizes a similar associative approach to his last release "Things." Rapping over woozy, soulful guitar that could have been lifted from D'Angelo's Voodoo, he airs various grievances about the world in the first verse, than delves into his personal mission statement in the second.
"Like Really" will appear on Oddisee's upcoming album The Iceberg. Icebergs have immense symbolic power. It might represent the thing that is going to sink us all, or how success obscures everything that comes before it: hard work, determination, failures, setbacks, disappointments, & unexpected obstacles. In the second verse, he lets the listener in on what the album title might be referring to: "I want that deeper message though, If you on top that's surface, drop that lesson though, preach."
Signed on the line but I didn't read the form
and the fine print is all about the times we mourn
and the color of my skin means I gotta be strong
& your hand me down faith said if I was reborn
