Reports have surfaced stating that Netflix is set to deliver a live-action series based on “Avatar: The Last Airbender.” Slated to begin production in 2019, the show will work in partnership with Nickelodeon. Fans will be pleased to know that the story's original creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael DiMartino will be serving as the series' executive producers and showrunners.

For those of you who may not be familiar with the original show, the celebrated and well-loved story-line is centered around as Aang, the last air bender, and his friends who inhabit a planet divided into four nations named after the elements: Water, Fire, Earth, and Air. The friends are known as benders, and through martial arts, each have the ability to manipulate an element. The Avatar is the sole being on the planet with the ability to control all four elements and with the help of his friends, takes on the task of restoring peace and order to the world against the disruptive forces of the Fire Lord, Ozai.

Of the recent Netflix collaboration, creators Konietzko and DiMartino have said “We’re thrilled for the opportunity to helm this live-action adaptation of ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender. We can’t wait to realize Aang’s world as cinematically as we always imagined it to be, and with a culturally appropriate, non-whitewashed cast." They went on to say "It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance to build upon everyone’s great work on the original animated series and go even deeper into the characters, story, action, and world-building. Netflix is wholly dedicated to manifesting our vision for this retelling, and we’re incredibly grateful to be partnering with them.”
