NASA's InSight spacecraft touched down on Mars yesterday afternoon, which prompted a joyous eruption at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. Included in the celebration was a pair of NASA engineers, later identified only as Brooke and Gene, who broke out an intricate handshake that quickly spread throughout social media.

As it turns out, Brook and Gene's celebratory handshake was actually inspired by San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Marquise Goodwin, who pulled off the same move with teammate Kendrick Bourne after scoring a third-quarter touchdown against the Chiefs back in Week 3.

According to CNN, the two NASA engineers started planning the handshake approximately six weeks ago, studying every detail of Goodwin's and Bourne's handshake and practicing them to make sure everything was perfect once the InSight spacecraft landed on the red planet.

"We knew we were sitting together in the control room, and we thought it would be kind of fun just for the two of us," said Brooke, a Chiefs fan, according to CNN. "We saw something that we liked from a previous game, and we kind of mimicked it."

"(Goodwin) did it better than we did it," Gene said.

Goodwin was honored to be apart of NASA's celebration, as seen in his tweets embedded below.
