Narcos spent three season diving into the world of Pablo Escobar. The Colombian drug trade was the main focus of the Netflix series, but now things are taking a hike up north. Instead of following the Colombians for a fourth season, Netflix decided to switch things up and explore the history of the Mexican drug trade. Mexico's Guadalajara Cartel will be the focus for the reset of Narcos, which has been dubbed Narcos: Mexico.
Two of the most talented actors of Mexican heritage will be starring in the new series, Diego Luna (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) and Michael Pena (Ant-Man and The Wasp). According to The Hollywood Reporter, Luna is set to play Felix Gallardo, the man who takes control of the Guadalajara Cartel in the 1980s. Pena will play DEA agent Kiki Camarena, who moves from California to Guadalajara to investigate the fledgling cartel. Alejandro Edda (Fear the Walking Dead) will fill the shoes of a young Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.
"The origins of the Guadalajara Cartel are in the late 1970s and early 1980s, so Narcos is going back in time," showrunner Eric Newman told THR. "We always knew that we would get to Mexico eventually. A key team comprised of myself and the guys I really trust and work very closely with — [director] Andi Baiz, [co-creators] Carlo Bernard and Doug Miro — have been discussing how to best transition to Mexico as early as season two. We decided on the Guadalajara Cartel because it represents the beginning of the modern Mexican drug trade. It makes sense to start there."
