Who says the Oscars are predictable? On Sunday night, just as the ceremony seemed like it would end much like the Grammys, awarding the safe choice (La La Land) over the more groundbreaking one (Moonlight), everything flipped.
As the team behind La La Land were making their acceptances speeches, they were interrupted with a shocking announcement -- Moonlight had won Best Picture. After many declarations that the correction was "not a joke" and an awkward Steve Harvey joke from host Jimmy Kimmell, La La Land's cast and crew were ushered off and the Moonlight team was brought up to accept the Best Picture trophy.
As you would expect, everyone in the room was in disbelief.
As far as how all this happened, presenter Warren Beatty suggested that he had the wrong envelope, and it's clear from he and Faye Dunaway's announcement of Best Picture that he's visibly confused by what he's reading (according to him, it was Emma Stone's Best Actress envelope).
