Macklemore's last single, "Drug Dealer," was a deeply personal track that found him exposing the evils of Big Pharma, of whom he's been a victim. After performing "Drug Dealer" on Jimmy Fallon last night, he has now unveiled another single, "Wednesday Morning," on which he attempts to piece together a message of hope in the wake of Donald Trump's surprise victory over Hillary Clinton.
Last week, on the actual "Wednesday Morning" after the final election results came in on Tuesday night, Macklemore outlined all of his thoughts in a lengthy Instagram post. He expressed his fear for his one-year-old daughter and then spoke on his commitment to teach her values of love and acceptance. "Wednesday Morning" puts those disjointed emotions and reflections into song form. Over light, cheery piano and sparse percussion, he sings and raps softly, as though he has his gaze set on his daughter the whole time. "Humanity is a privilege, we can't give in," he tells his listeners, "When they build walls, we'll build bridges."
He ends the song by singing, "I hope, I hope that it's gon' be alright, but...what a hell of a night." That we can all agree on.
