The self-described new King of the Teens, Lil Yachty has been riding high in 2017 after being named a creative designer for preppy sailing brand Nautica. GQ recently sat down with the rapper and Sailing Team leader for an interview at Nautica’s New York Fashion Week: Men’s show, and the young artist explained how he ended up with the collaboration, what he actually thinks of sailing, and more.
Yachty’s love for the nautical has been a staple of his look for a long time, he explains he didn’t pursue Nautica directly. Instead, he just tagged them on Instagram until eventually they noticed him. The red-haired rapper is surprisingly candid throughout the interview, calling Nautica’s runway show “some old man shit,” and then even revealing that although he’s sailed before he thinks, “that shit is wack.”
He elaborates, “it’s hard, well it’s not even hard. It just takes a lot of energy. I’m real laid back.” If you recall, young Yachty was taken sailing by XXL and didn’t seem to enjoy his time on the boat aside from when he got to steer.
As for Nautica’s future? Yachty things he can bring his youthful expertise to the brand and “attract a different demographic.”
