Lil Wayne and DJ Drama inadvertently changed the entire mixtape game with the Dedication/Gangsta Grillz series. The first Dedication mixtape was released in 2005, which marked the beginning of Lil Wayne’s dizzying mixtape/feature verse domination. From that moment on, Wayne became the mixtape monster, releasing a slew of classics outside of the Dedication series, such as No Ceilings and the pre-Dedication series, Da Drought. While fans patiently (or not) await Tha Carter V, Wayne’s next entry into his legendary album series that is currently entangled in legal yellow-tape, mixtape Weezy decided to return to the format that allows him the most freedom.
Dedication 6 was released by Tune and DJ Drama on Christmas Day, a timely present for Young Money fans craving some new content. Following the same recipe that thrust the Dedication series into hip-hop infamy, Weezy enthusiastically destroys records that once belonged to his peers. He commandeers tracks like Kendrick Lamar’s "DNA," or Post Malone’s “Rockstar” as if the instrumentals were his property to begin with. For fifteen records straight, Wayne raps like a man possessed and brandishes his lyrical ability like a weapon of mass destruction. Wayne is known for his outlandish metaphors, hyper-sexual punchlines, and blatant lyrics about drug addiction, which feature prominently throughout the entire mixtape. His ability to create powerful images within his lyrics (tell me “I swear my bitches do it ‘till they suck the brown off” didn’t make you cringe when you heard it?) is Weezy’s strength, a talent he is well aware of. Although Weezy may be past his prime mixtape days, Dedication 6 is still replete with entertaining bars. He hasn’t lost it yet.
