In a since-deleted Snapchat video, professional racer Lewis Hamilton can be seen mocking the fact that his nephew is wearing a costume princess dress. Speaking about the young boy's subversion of gender norms, Hamilton can be heard saying "I'm so sad right now. Look at my nephew." He then goes on to speak directly to the child in question by asking "Why are you wearing a princess dress? Is this what you got for Christmas? Why did you ask for a princess dress for Christmas?"

Later on in the video, Hamilton even shouts to his nephew that "Boys don't wear princess dresses!" effectively igniting a firestorm of criticism aimed at Hamilton.

Even though the video has been removed, it's reverberations can be felt throughout social media, especially via Twitter, where detractors began to voice their concerns over Hamilton's opinions over gendered dress codes.

The backlash is mostly aimed at Hamilton's insensitivity, as he is essentially mocking a child's right to engage in harmless behaviour such as dress-up.

Lewis has since apologized for his remarks, taking to Twitter to express his resentment in a series of tweets:
