Lauryn Hill is still trying to explain the cause of all her tax troubles. Lauryn Hill plead guilty to charges of tax evasion last year, after earning more than $1.8 million for the years of 2005, 2006 and 2007 and neglecting to pay her taxes. Now that the singer's sentencing date is approaching, she has filed legal documents asking for lenience.
Now that Lauryn faces several years in prison, she has revealed what may be the reason behind her withdrawal from the music scene after rising to fame in the '90s. According to the documents she filed, Lauryn stopped paying taxes, "when she withdrew from society at large due to what she perceived as manipulation and very real threats to herself and her family."
This could explain her absence, but is also quite a different explanation from her previous one-- where she claims to have remained hidden from society for the purpose of getting back in touch with her musical roots.
Lauryn is asking a judge to consider a bunch of factors in her case, including the fact that she will be able to pay off her debt much faster if she's not in jail. She's asking a judge for probation.
The sentencing occurs April 22nd. We'll keep you updated.
