Khalid and Normani premiere their powerful ballad on "The Tonight Show."
A few months back, Khalid and Normani (of Fifth Harmony) teamed up for the release of "Love Lies," which arrived courtesy of the Love, Simon soundtrack. While the studio version dropped to immediate acclaim, the true potential of the intimate ballad had yet to be reached. Now, it would appear that proper steps are indeed being taken. Both Khalid and Normani spent last night premiering their collaboration on The Tonight Show, which marked its official television debut. It's only a matter of time before this one starts gaining some serious commercial momentum.
Occasionally, performances on late night television can feel stilted and/or phoned in. Luckily, in this instance, such is not the case. Khalid and Normani's duet feels at once organic and powerful, with both vocalists exhibiting their impressive range as they trade verses. It's a collaboration in the truest sense, with focus allocated to both artists in equal measure. Backed by a capable live band, "Love Lies" gets a solid, live-band fronted (sadly not The Roots) arrangement, which climaxes into a powerful crescendo. Even if you're not a die-hard fan of RnB, this particular performance is captivating enough for the average passerby.
