Key! was part of short-lived period of experimentation with ATL occultists like OG Maco and ILoveMakonnen. The ATL rapper and his contemporaries said to hell with easy street, and developed a sound all their own. Awful Records also emerged from that time period, almost out of necessity. Some called it a fork in the road, others likened it to a debate over Rap vs Trap, none of which were arguments intentionally sought out by Key! or his peers.
So to see Key! stay true to his hard-won aesthetics comes as no surprise. Ardent supporters of the underground gave Key! their full attention when he dropped 777 with Kenny Beats, an artist largely untapped by hip hop listeners. Those who trusted his personal judgement were rewarded with a vintage Key! performance. "Take Her Back" is one in the same.
