February 15th, 2016, the same night that Kendrick Lamar was accepting the Best Rap Album Grammy for his magnum opus, To Pimp A Butterfly, his friend and label-mate, Jay Rock, was having the worst night of his life.
A serious motorcycle accident landed Rock in the hospital, and had his plans to go on tour for his 90059 album disappear in an instant. Suffering from numerous broken bones, Rock had to go through several surgeries and lots of effort to recover from his injuries. This is how the third (and presumably final) episode of Jay Rock's Road To Redemption documentary series begins, titled after his third and latest album: Redemption.
Just overcoming his injuries was only half the battle, however. As the title of the album suggests, the creation of the Redemption album deals heavily with him getting back into a place where he can succeed after almost having his life taken away from him. Similar to the first two episodes of the series, Rock is rarely on camera speaking about himself. The one instance he does speak, it's him describing his injuries and moving around with the help of a walker. Typically, the exposition is given through those he helped succeed, such as Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q, and Isaiah Rashad.
Considering his doctors told him that he wouldn't be able to walk for a year, Jay Rock's album can be seen as a celebration of human spirit, something Rock has in spades. Watch the third episode of Road To Redemption below.
