According to the infamous Hollywood perma-fixture Paris Hilton, the following photo of her and Britney Spears is a historical moment in the inception of the Digital Age. This photo is no ordinary photo, in fact, it is the earliest record of Oxford Dictionaries 2013 word of the year. Yes, you guessed it, it's a selfie.

When taken in at face value, no pun intended, it isn't that hard to believe that the reality T.V. pioneer Paris Hilton coined the selfie. That is until light research unveils that the first selfie ever recorded was taken by Robert Cornelius back in the golden year of 1839. And once that small tidbit of information is uncovered, the proverbial floodgates fly open and the Internet swoops in to provide ample examples of Selfie ingenuity by legendary names such as Susan Sarandon, Andy Warhol, Bill Nye the Science Guy and more.

Though Paris Hilton had good intentions, or not, with her affirmation of creating the selfie, she's wrong. But in the end, Miss Hilton deserves a thank you because in a roundabout way her Selfie with Britney helped to spawn a generation of expert Selfie snapping men and women.
