The 2018 Latin Grammy Award nominations were announced on Thursday (September 20), and J Balvin was blessed with eight nods. Balvin leads all nominees based off the strength of his album Vibras. Of course, Balvin's hit single “Mi gente” earned him numerous nods, including one for his remix featuring Beyonce. Other than Balvin and a select few other artists, the Reggaeton genre was widely ignored though. The nominees this year seems to fall under the category of pop or more traditional Latin music. For example, Ozuna and Bad Bunny are only up for one award each.
Instead, this year, voters decided to shine a light on songwriters. “I was surprised at the number of singer/songwriters,” stated Gabriel Abaroa, President/CEO of The Latin Recording Academy via Billboard. “I realized the membership voted for lyrical music. So instead of getting frustrated by what didn’t make in, I am happy for what did make it in. And among that, I was struck by the strong presence of singer/songwriters and a lot of new product.”
