When Mac Miller passed away, French Montana shared a 2016 Fader documentary that featured a scene with the two artists in the studio together. In the clip, Mac jokes about a bottle of lean, with French stepping in to say "Listen to me, I’m your brother. This right here, you’re going to miss a couple of shows." In the video Mac continues on to state, “I’d rather be the corny white rapper, than the drugged out mess who can’t even get out of his house. Overdosing is just not cool. There's no legendary romance. You don’t go down in history because you overdosed… you just die.”

Chinx is also featured in the video in question, another friend of French's that has passed away. In a recent interview with Raquel Harper, French reveals that he thinks he could have saved Mac's life. "If you saw the video that me and him did," says French, referencing the documentary, "and I'm like, 'bro, you're overdoing it. Sometimes, people don't have people that keep them grounded. It could go left. I just feel like they let him get away with whatever." French continues on to claim that he always plays that big brother role, as he did when Mac was going hard in the documentary. He believes that if he stuck around to play that role longer, or if Mac had people who adequately stepped up and tried to stop him from using, the rapper would still be here today.
