The suspect is currently in custody.
Will Smith, a New Orleans Saints player who helped the team win the Super Bowl in 2009, was fatally shot following a traffic collision Saturday night. Smith was reportedly driving in New Orleans's Lower Garden District where he was involved in a collision with a Hummer H2. According to police, Smith and the driver of the vehicle then "exchanged words at which time the driver of the Hummer produced a handgun," at which point Smith was reportedly shot "multiple times". His wife, Racquel Smith, also suffered two gunshot wounds, and was transported to hospital.
The suspect, Cardell Hayes, 28, was apprehended following the attack and has been charged with second degree murder. A firearm was recovered as evidence at the scene.
Smith was 34 years old. His former teammates and fans have been sharing their condolences for the family on social media throughout the day. His family has released a statement expressing they are "thankful for the outpouring of support and prayers."
New Orleans Saints VP of Communications Greg Bensel was the first to officially confirm the tragic news. View his tweet, and those of some of Smiths friends and teammates, below.
