The film's been in the works for the past few years at this point. Kenya Barris, the creator of Black-Ish, wrote the script. Although the original director, Jonthan Levine, is no longer directing, it was later confirmed that Craig Brewer would be directing the film in instead. Eddie Murphy and Craig Brewer are also working together on the upcoming Netflix film, Dolemite Is My Name.
“After many years of anticipation, I’m thrilled that Coming to America 2 is officially moving forward,” Murphy said in a statement. “We’ve assembled a great team that will be led by Craig Brewer, who just did an amazing job on Dolemite, and I’m looking forward to bringing all these classic and beloved characters back to the big screen.”
The premise of the sequel surrounds Akeem finding out that he has a long-lost son before going back to the United States to meet his son and bring him back to Zamunda as the throne to the heir.
