Donald Trump has exposed himself once again as a man who does not know how simple grocery store transactions work. When asked by a reported what federal employees on furlough with no pay would do about food, which costs money, Donald Trump coined a new phrase: "work along." He said that grocery stores would recognize "local people" and "work along," which presumably means giving away free groceries to people that seem like they might be employees of the government. He also maintained that banks would "work along:"

I know banks are working along. If you have mortgages, the mortgagees, the folks collecting the interest and all of those things, they work along. And that’s what happens in time like this. They know the people, they’ve been dealing with them for years, and they work along.

This is not the first time Trump has mischaracterized the nature of grocery store transactions. In November he said that ""if you buy a box of cereal—you have a voter ID."

Today's statement comes on the 35th day of the government shutdown, with services beginning to be disrupted all around the country, like in the La Guardia airport in New York, where flights are being delayed because their air traffic control department is understaffed and overworked.
