For the last three months, we have been navigating through a global pandemic with the death toll officially rising above 100,000 in the United States. COVID-19 has basically put the world on hold, possibly changing things as we knew them forever. While restrictions are being eased, a different issue, which has been around for far longer than the coronavirus, is taking over and killing even more Americans.
Don Lemon, a television journalist for CNN, made a powerful statement when speaking about COVID-19 and racism following the death of George Floyd, a 46-year-old unarmed black man who was killed by police in Minneapolis. The headline was strong and it has gone viral on social media, attracting over one million likes and nearly 400,000 retweets.
"Two deadly viruses are killing Americans: COVID-19 and racism," was the headline that flashed on the screen during Don's take. The message was echoed across social media with people either agreeing with the statement or implying that he went too far. However, considering how racism is still very much a disturbing issue in the world in 2020, this needed to be said.
